Wayne Elcock Wants a Crack at The British Title

Wayne Elcock's British title dreams were left in tatters after he was forced to withdraw from a showdown with current incumbent Darren Barker last November. Elcock, 35, was KO'd by a bout of gastro enteritis yet Birmingham-based 'Mad Dog' believes that his experience and pedigree, not to mention sharing the same promoter, Mick Hennessy, as champion Barker, should be enough to put him in line for a shot at the 160lb crown.

"As we have the same promoter, Mike [sic] Hennessy, it shouldn't be too difficult to make the necessary arrangements. And because I had to pull out through illness I hope the Boxing Board of Control will have sympathy with my claim to be re-matched with Barker for the British title if not the Commonwealth crown. I am back in training and will be ready for action within six weeks. All I need is the nod," said Elcock when speaking to SundayMercury.net.

Elcock is 1-2 (1) in recent fights; he was blasted out in three rounds by Matthew Macklin last March. However, the proposed fight with Barker had caught fire in the imagination of the British boxing public. Barker is currently MIA due to Mick's failure to land a stable TV contract for his fighters. A Barker-Elcock fight has 'TV fight' written all over it and would be good for both men; it would also be a welcome tonic for British boxing.
