Schmeichel has divided loyalties

Nottingham Evening Post22nd March, 2010

FORMER Manchester United goalkeeping legend Peter Schmeichel cannot wait for April 24.

That is when fellow Dane Mikkel Kessler challenges WBC super-middleweight Champion Carl Froch in the second round of the SuperSix Classic in Denmark.

"I think this will be a fantastic fight," said Schmeichel, now a popular TV host for Danish pay TV giant Viasat.

"Obviously I'm pulling for my countryman Mikkel Kessler. He is a national icon and will have five million Danes behind him.

"But, having spent many years in England, I really like Carl Froch. Just like Mikkel, he is a tough and proud warrior.

"I have no doubts that we will see an epic battle between two real champions."

Schmeichel believes the SuperSix is boxing's equivalent of the Champions League.

"It is such a great tournament," he said. "What more could the fans ask than for the best fighters in the division battling it out."

Meanwhile, Kessler says he is in perfect shape for the big fight.

"We have been working hard and all the pieces are coming together," he said. "Carl Froch will not forget April 24. I have something to prove - to myself, for the 10,000 fans at Herning and the millions on tv.

"The Viking Warrior will be back. I will be world champion again on April 24."
