Froch sets sights on retiring as light-heavyweight champ

This is Nottingham26th March, 2010

CARL Froch as set his sights on retiring as the undefeated champion of the world - at light-heavyweight.

The Nottingham WBC super-middleweight title holder is four weeks away from meeting Mikkel Kessler in Denmark in his second fight of the Super Six Boxing Classic series.

It will be the third defence of the world crown he won in 2008 against Jean Pascal in a brutal 12-round contest at Nottingham Arena.

He then beat former world champion Jermain Taylor in the USA before defeating Andre Dirrell in the opening round of the current series.

But as he looks to beat Kessler in Herning on April 24, the 32-year-old 'Cobra' is also casting an eye to the long-term future to ensure he retires as a boxing legend.

Froch said: "I am world champion, on top of my game and I can go strong until I am 35 or 36.

"Who knows? I don't drink, I don't smoke, I eat the right food and I am just 32.

"I want to win the Super Six tournament first, as that will give me universal status. Then maybe step up to light-heavyweight, eat a few bananas and fight Jean Pascal.

"He is now WBC light-heavyweight champion. We have had an handshake on it that we would fight each other.

"He wants to get the blemish off his record and I said I would give him the chance to do it.

"I will step up and fight him for the world title.

"But one step at a time. I have Kessler, then (Arthur) Abraham and then two more fights to win this Super Six.

"For now, I am really looking to April 24. It is going to be a humdinger."

Froch was speaking at Liberty's Gym yesterday, where he helped mark the 50th anniversary of legendary boxing marque Lonsdale, along with Olympic gold medallist James DeGale and bronze medallist Tony Jeffries
