DAWS TAKES ENGLISH TITLE
Sporting Life12th April, 2009
Lenny Daws won the vacant English light-welterweight title with a points victory over Peter McDonagh.
McDonagh ended Lee Purdy's unbeaten run in his last contest to claim the Southern Area title but Daws went into the fight in confident mood and came on strong in the second half after an iffy start.
That won the 30-year-old a 97-94 verdict from referee John Keane after a tough 10-rounder to take his record to 19-1, with McDonagh now 13-14.
In the lead-up to the fight Daws revealed his hope that a victory would put him back in the mix for a shot at the British title, which he lost to Barry Morrison in 2007.
