Boxing: Phill Fury in a hurry to be champ

Leicestershire Mercury15th June, 2009

Teenage hot-shot Phill Fury is targeting a place in the record books after storming to a whirlwind win in Wigan.

Fury blasted out Matt Seawright inside two rounds to make it back-to-back wins as a professional light-middleweight - just two months after celebrating 18th birthday.

Fury was a top-class amateur with Hinckley's Heart of England ABC, reaching a National Schools championship final and twice winning Midlands honours, and is on the fast track to the top in the paid ranks.

He has to be 21 to box for the British title and is on course for that.

Father and trainer Hughie said: "Phill has been in the gym since he was able to stand up and his ambition is to be the youngest British or Irish champion because he is eligible to box for both.

"He has a long way to go yet, but there's no doubt he has the talent to go a long way."

Fury showed his talent by the way he took apart Seawright at Robin Park Leisure Centre.

Seawright had proved himself to be durable in his previous 20 fights, but had no answer to Fury's classy body attacks.

His punches forced Seawright to take a count in a neutral corner just before the bell to end the opening round and Fury soon had him in desperate trouble again early in the second.

Fury had him pinned on the ropes, shipping punches to body and head, and the referee stepped in.
