Thaxton wants Murray fight

Norfolk Eastern Daily Press17th June, 2009

Jon Thaxton insists he will be British champion again - even though his title challenge is under a cloud.

The Norwich lightweight was due to meet the winner of Saturday's clash between holder John Murray and Scott Lawton - but Murray lost the title on the scales when he failed to make the weight.

The fight went ahead and Murray won, but he had already been stripped of his title and now faces disciplinary action.

Now Thaxton - who was at ringside - and his promoter, Mick Hennessy, are hoping the British Board of Control, will allow him to take on Murray, although that could depend on what the BBBC decide when they meet today.

Board steward and central area chairman Geoff Boulter said: "We have a Board meeting on Tuesday, and during the course of it we will be discussing the championship and the events surrounding the weigh-in, plus how we are going to deal with Mr Murray, and the championship.

"I can't really comment on what the outcome might be, but it is almost certain there will be some form of disciplinary action."

Murray, Thaxton - who himself relinquished his belt so Murray could fight for it last year - and Hennessy are keen on a September match-up.

"The best fight out there is Jon Thaxton-John Murray," said Thaxton, who is hoping to bounce back after losing his European title to Anthony Mezaache in February. "His performance was absolutely brilliant. He just took Scott Lawton apart. I can't wait for it. I'm well up for it. There was a tear in my eye when I had to give the belt up. I will hold the British title again
