what about John Murray - is he a future star?

John Murray is an unbeaten lightweight fighter from Manchester. He is the former British lightweight champion, only loosing the title before his last fight against Scott Lawton. Murray came in 2oz overweight and after arriving at the weigh in late he didn't have enough time to shed the excess weight. He went on to out box Lawton and win by TKO in the 6th round, but unfortunately for him he had already been stripped of the title and only Lawton had the possibility of winning the title had he won.

Murray is held in high regard in British boxing circles and many believe he will be a future world champion. There have been many rumors of him fighting Khan in the future but Murray looks set for a show down with former European Lightweight champion Jon Thaxton in the near future.

Murray has good boxing skills and a good chin but is still untested above domestic level. With a record of 27 wins and 15 KO's he is not a really big puncher this coupled with the fact he doesn't have the same sort of speed as someone such as Khan makes me wonder if he really can do it at the top level in what is currently a very tough division. Other than Thaxton and Khan he has already beat the best we have in Britain so if he does face Thaxton and beats him he needs to move on and start fighting at a higher level to future his improvement. The lad is full of confidence and believes he can make it at the top level but he will not get the experience he needs fighting at domestic level. If he does succeed the key will be his heart, his good chin and his improving boxing ability. Whether he can reach the top is still undecided but he is a good fighter and will give it his all so expect to see him moving up the ranks soon.
