Barry McGuigan has told the Daily Mirror that Nathan Cleverly, 22, can be the next big thing in British boxing. Cleverly fights Danny McIntosh, 29, at the York Hall this Saturday, with the British light-heavyweight title on the line, although both men are unbeaten, McGuigan feels that Cleverly is the fighter destined for the top.

Cleverly already holds the Commonwealth light-heavyweight title, he also has a win over the durable Tony Oakey tucked under his belt, and McGuigan, writing in his Daily Mirror column, is tipping Nathan to be the next star name to come out of Wales.

'I can see Cleverly emerging as a star, capable of stepping on to the world stage. Not as the new Calzaghe but as the first Nathan Cleverly,' McGuigan enthused.

Cleverly lives up to his name, he has recently completed a degree in theoretical mathematics, he will be looking to get the angles right against Norwich's McIntosh, who recently defeated Steve Spartacus for the English title.

Hennessey Sports has put a strong bill together; the Cleverly-McIntosh contest will be televised live on ITV4.
