Junior Witter's dream of a world title unification clash with Amir Khan has been shattered after his nightmare attempt to win back the WBC light-welterweight belt.

The Yorkshire boxer quit on his stool at the end of the eighth round due to an injured right hand leaving unbeaten American Devon Alexander to walk off with the belt at Rancho Mirage, near Palm Springs, California, in the early hours of yesterday.

Witter then had to cope with taunts of 'Witter is a quitter' from the American crowd.

Now Alexander, 22, rather than Witter is a possible future opponent for Bolton's Khan, 22, who won the WBA version of the world light-welterweight title last month.

Witter, 35, was behind on all three judges' scorecards yet was not getting battered when he decided to surrender.

Witter insisted: "It's not that I wanted to quit, I wanted to win. I had a hairline fracture in the same right hand six months ago and I felt like I reinjured it in the fourth.

"The pain moved up my hand to my elbow joint and it was just too much."
