Furious reaction to Tyson victory

Tyson Fury was victorious in his eagerly anticipated clash with John McDermott but the English title fight ended in controversial circumstances, with referee Terry O'Connor compared to Dick Turpin by Frank Maloney.Fury, 21, has been thrust into the spotlight after just eight professional fights owing to his supreme confidence and is expected to progress to the world stage.

Yet he was forced to go the 10-round distance by journeyman McDermott and with most onlookers scoring the bout in favour of 'Big Bad John', the announcement that Fury had been awarded the contest 98-92 by referee O'Connor was met with widespread disapproval.

"I'm sure I will be called up before the (British Boxing) Board for my behaviour but Terry O'Connor is a disgrace to British boxing for what he's done here tonight," said Maloney, McDermott's promoter, after the bout.

"Why do I want to be in the business when you're getting robbed? At least Dick Turpin has a mask on when he robs you."
