Fury-McDermott Undercard Report

East Side Boxing14th September, 2009

On Friday night at the Brentwood Centre in Essex, England, Frank Maloney presented a fight card highlighted by the most controversial decision to take place in a British ring in many years. After outboxing challenger Tyson Fury over the course of the ten round title bout, English heavyweight champion John McDermott was inexplicably declared the loser, 98-92, by referee Terry O'Connor. McDermott had been much more accurate, landed the more effective punches and controlled the pace of the contest in nearly every round. As such, O'Connor's awarding of Fury the English title is now under review by the British Boxing Board of Control..

Pending the outcome of the Board's ruling, McDermott, 25-6 (16), has now been involved in three controversial decisions in a row while Fury, 8-0 (7), had to go the distance in a bout for the first time in his career.
