Froch v Dirrell re-match demanded

This is Nottingham Ray Yoemans9th November, 2009

ANDRE Dirrell may get a re-match with Nottingham champion Carl Froch for the WBC super-middleweight title.

Promoter Gary Shaw went to bat for his fighter at the WBC's 47th annual convention and asked for a re-match after commenting on the repeated fouls he claims were committed by Froch on his way to a contested split decision win.

But WBC Board member Charles Giles says he has watched the fight twice and still feels Froch won.

"Froch is still undefeated, a great fighter, and has never made any excuses for his performance in the ring," he said.

WBC President Jose Sulaiman did not rule out a rematch - so long as it doesn't interrupt the Super Six tournament in doing so.

"We have made a commitment to support the Super Six and want to stand by our word," he said. "We will make a communication to Showtime per the rules of the tournament, and go from there."

Meanwhile, Andre Ward says he is right on schedule for his Super Six clash with WBA super-middleweight champion Mikkel Kessler in Oakland, on November 21.

Ward, best known for winning Olympic gold in Athens in 2004, is carrying American hopes after first-round defeats for both Jermain Taylor and Andre Dirrell.

"I definitely feel like I'm back in Greece all over again," said Ward. "And even though the Americans fought well, unfortunately we were unable to get a victory in the first two fights. I'm definitely inspired to bring America their first victory in the Super Six tournament."

Unlike Dirrell, who went into isolation in the mountains ahead of his fight with Carl Froch, Ward has stayed in Oakland.

Kessler has arrived in California for his final preparations.
